Project Description:

Dog Island Acquisition Project Protects Over 800 Acres of Coastal Habitat nestled between the Colorado River delta to the north and the expanse of West Matagorda Bay, Dog Island features a mosaic of habitats—wooded uplands, tidal marshes, creeks, oyster reefs, and bayous. Its strategic location adjacent to the Mad Island Marsh Wildlife Management Area creates a continuous coastal conservation corridor spanning over 9 miles.  The Matagorda Bay Foundation (MBF), in partnership with the Texas General Land Office (GLO), has successfully completed the Dog Island Acquisition Project—conserving and restoring more than 800 acres of critical coastal habitat.  This landmark effort was made possible through the GLO’s Coastal Management Program (CMP), supported by funding from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) awarded to the State of Texas in 2021, and through the generosity of the Scott Mitchell family.  

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., emphasized the project’s importance, stating: “As someone who spent many years living along the Texas coast, protecting our shorelines and natural habitats is a deeply personal mission.  The completion of the Dog Island project represents real progress in our shared commitment to safeguarding Texas’ coastal landscapes, including its wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife.  I’m grateful for the partnership with the Matagorda Bay Foundation and for the dedication of the many volunteers and stakeholders who made this achievement possible.” 

In addition to habitat protection, Dog Island offers a 4-mile trail open to the public, perfect for those seeking outdoor adventure, wildlife viewing, or world-class birdwatching.  The trail is maintained year-round by MBF and invites visitors to experience the island’s rich biodiversity up close. 

The Dog Island project stands as a milestone in long-term efforts to preserve the ecological integrity and resilience of Matagorda Bay while providing meaningful public access to one of the region’s most valuable natural assets.
