Seagrass meadows historically covered large areas of East Matagorda Bay, but today only a fraction remains.
MBF, in partnership with Phillips 66, is preparing a pilot study focused on shoal grass. The study will involve planting native seagrasses in small test plots with protective exclosures and monitoring water quality, growth, and survival using data loggers and standard ecological sampling methods.
The pilot will begin in spring 2026 with the goal of generating knowledge to inform future seagrass restoration efforts in Matagorda Bay.
